When learning about or using social media would you consider yourself to be a leader? Or would you say you’re a follower? Perhaps you’re both. As it turns out it’s fine to be both in social media. Finding, following and being followed by the experts, has never been easier.

I will speak specifically about how the social media community works. We share information. We promote others. We learn from each other. Being a contributor to making social media better is key. Everyone wants to learn how to do it. After all, learning from others is what we were taught in school, wasn’t it? It’s known that in many industries the sharing of information is frowned upon. It’s different in Social Media. To clarify, you definitely want to be sure you are following the right people. And beware of the snake-oil salesman that will say all the right words and put spin on everything.

Professionals in social media know that our business isn’t going to suffer because we recommend who to follow. The social media industry is about being honest, bringing value, spreading the word, educating and helping others. The social media community is just that…a community. A sharing community. Don’t be afraid to share about someone else in the social media community.

With so many people unemployed, so many people underemployed, so many people unhappy at their current job and so much advice on how to get hired…what are you doing about it?

I used to use the word “So” a lot. The word “so” is often used in conjunction with wanting to know more, hoping to dig deeper and also in the sense of “who cares”. In this blog I am using “so” to dig deeper and learn more from you about how you or people you know are using social media to find a job. If you are the one looking for a job you know all too well that it can be tough out there to even get a rejection letter much less an interview. So your answers here, will help others out there. In turn feel free to post what you are looking for and we will do our best to share your information.

If you are just starting to use social media you may not be aware that many corporations are using it to find the very best candidates. A friend of mine, Allison Kruse, @WAGSRECRUITER is a Talent Sourcer at Walgreens. Twitter is one of the ways she is getting the word out to find potential job candidates. Walgreens and many corporations are turning to Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook and other avenues to find talented people.

Even before social media, you had to do everything possible to set yourself apart from the competition. You are very much a brand just like the company to which you may be applying. In this economy, the use of social media tools can certainly work in your favor to get you in the door. It can often get you “in the know” about who the key contact or hiring manager might be. “Walls” are sometimes put up if a company uses a service like Monster or CareerBuilder, allowing the hiring managers and departments to remain anonymous. But knowing how to use the tools available in social media can often break down those barriers.

A few quick tips. Make sure your LinkedIn profile is up to date, without spelling or grammatical errors and make sure it is complete. If you don’t know what this tip means check out www.LinkedIn.com . Sign up for an account. And know that it is one of the first places a potential employer looks. LinkedIn is also a great place to look for jobs. I have many friends that have been successful at finding jobs via LinkedIn. Remember if you are using social media in any capacity, future employers could possibly be scrutinizing over your behavior. Your pictures, posts and overall demeanor on these sites could mean the difference between getting hired or fired even before you get the job. Use the security and privacy features available and if you are serious about finding a job remove any controversial pictures first…among other things.

When was the last time you had to say, “I’m Sorry”? Remember that a sincere apology can speak volumes about you, your business, product and solutions. If you need to apologize don’t delay and do what’s right!

Yesterday I asked the Wednesday Question; a simple question really. The question was, “Why?”
One word with a question mark.
One word that should be asked many times in a variety of situations.
One word that doesn’t always have an answer.
One word that coupled with other words leads to many answers and reactions that are either good or bad.

But why ask “Why?” on the blog? The question was seeking comments from readers without any explanation of the nature of the question. Not to get all Freudian on you and into your psyche because the fact is, I wasn’t sure what kind of responses I would get. Now I haven’t let much time pass and maybe people are still pondering the question. [See comments on previous post]

The same response can also be expected from Social media. People everywhere are asking “Why?” in relation to social media. Truth be told the answers are coming in droves from the “experts” as to what we should all be doing with social media. Are they all correct answers? NO. The correct answer for you may be different than it is for someone else.

It is not always easy to calculate what may or may not be effective. That is truly why social media is so intriguing and the new frontier for all of us. As time passes there is some predictability for what we can expect from a variety of tools and strategies. In time we will undoubtedly have conclusive numbers & research studies to review which will back-up the claims as to “why Social Media?”

As can be expected each person draws their own conclusions and interprets whatever they see and hear on the internet in their own way good, bad or indifferent. The conclusions people draw do not always utilize logic or common sense. I’m not saying there is anything wrong with that when it comes to social media in one respect but you must take this fact into consideration when planning a social media strategy. Sometimes logic goes right out the window and those are the programs that can work best. Is it possible planning has nothing to do with it?

Know your audience or learn more about your audience and take some calculated risks but keep asking the question “Why?” and the answers will come. Now that you know “Why?” the question was asked. Do you have more questions? Go ahead and ask.

Why?

Which services make the most sense for your business to outsource? Or are you uncomfortable releasing control to experts outside of the company? Many small business owners go into business because of a passion they have for what they do. Being good at something doesn’t always translate to being a great entrepreneur or business owner. I recommend reading, “The E Myth Revisited” by Michael Gerber, @emyth. Michael does a fantastic job speaking to the entrepreneurs (present and future) as he helps to dispel the myths of the reality vs. fantasy of owning your own your own business.

More Details. . .

Many of us go into business as specialists in our fields. But let’s face it we aren’t all experts at everything nor are we gifted with all of the skills required for owning a business. Some of us have decent math skills but we don’t know everything about the accounting as it relates our business. Some of us have computer skills but that doesn’t mean we can diagnose and solve the technical problems when they arise. Yet these are skills required to run many of our businesses. Some small business owners have to stop being penny wise and pound foolish. So I ask the question once again in a slightly different way, “Would it make sense for you to outsource tasks if it saves you time and money? Would outsourcing free you up so you can handle the important work?” Clearly the answer will be different for all of us.

Today and on future Wednesday’s I will be asking you, as business owners, questions that are designed to encourage conversation. The idea is to share with each other helpful suggestions and possibly answers to the things we all face with our businesses. First, the question, and then I will provide details about why I am asking.

As a small business owner what happens to your business if something happens to you?

A little over two years ago I started a group on LinkedIn called the North Shore Entrepreneurial Network (NSEN). The original purpose of the group was to get a small group of my friends out to network, drink coffee and help each other with our respective businesses. Today we have 479 members. We meet once a month on the second Tuesday, network and have three speakers that present in a speed format.

A reoccurring discussion amongst our members is “what happens to my business if something happens to me?” Many of us are small business owners with very few employees (or we operate independently). If something would happen that takes us away from the office for an extended period of time (vacation, health problems, etc.) who would be the person able to assume the responsibility of running the company? Would one of our employees be able to handle the business in our absence? Could a friend or business colleague take over? Would my spouse know what my business does, how it operates, how to contact clients, how to handle everything related to my business?

We often avoid the question because we don’t want to consider the fact that we actually might not be immortal or superhuman. So I will ask the question again, this time in a slightly different way. . .What have you done to safeguard your business if you can’t be the person running it?

How many times have you heard this comment? “You’re listening to me, but you’re not hearing what I’m saying”. It’s one thing if you hear this line from your spouse, significant other, friend or colleague. Typically this is not a positive statement. The real question I have for you is this: how are you listening to your clients? What are your current and future clients talking about and asking about? What are they looking for on the web as it relates to your business? How and where can you actually “hear” what they are saying?

Listening when it comes to social media is something that is often overlooked. When is the right time to start listening in the chronological timeline of social media? The answer is…Right from the very beginning! Most business owners are so eager to get the Facebook fan page and Tweets going that they miss the point.

Start by listening first, to your current clients and potential clients. What are they talking about, interested in or having problems with? How can you help them? Given your expertise and your products, how can you be part of their solution? When you understand your target audience and where they hang out on the web you will be able to effectively implement the best tools. Ultimately these tools will make the most sense for everyone, giving everyone their sought-after results.

In the beginning as part of your social media process “listening to the web” means researching and finding individuals, groups, communities, bloggers, fans and other related people and products who can dramatically impact your business. We often hear, “I don’t have time for that.” But finding time can mean the difference between success and failure of your social media strategy. When working with our clients we always recommend and ongoing commitment to taking time for research and listening. Part of this process also falls into the reputation management aspect of the solutions. The fact is that whether you do it or we do it…don’t wait, do it now.

Even if you have already implemented the aforementioned tools (Facebook and Twitter) it’s never too late to start listening. There are plenty of tools that you can harness and find your clients so that you can listen to them. If you are unsure what these tools are (many of the tools are free) give us a call. Yin Yang is a Chinese Tao symbol representing universal harmony and the positive balance that comes from the unity between complimentary forces.

When our lives are in balance between complementary forces like work and family, we are happy, healthy and productive. When our balance is out of whack, we are often miserable, frustrated and unproductive.

So it’s the holiday season and you are challenged with finding the right gift for that special someone. Do you really want to give them a gift they don’t need? Certainly not! Why not give the gift that keeps on giving? Although this may be hard to believe, there are still many people that don’t know how to use Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter. You may be one of them.

How often have you heard these statements, “I don’t know how to use Facebook, LinkedIn or any of those things” or “I am afraid to use Facebook and LinkedIn.” Typically there is fear associated with not knowing how to use these tools thus creating the fear of the unknown. I will say that I know many people who would love to be on Facebook but they aren’t, because they just don’t know how to get started.


For many of our fears we all might want to consider a good therapist. But for the fear of social media here are a few quick suggestions that will solve the problem and also serve as a great holiday gift.

For the people you never know what to get, who also don’t understand social media, you could spend time teaching them about one or several of the social media tools. I know for a fact that there are many grandparents who want to connect with their grandchildren more often. Learning Facebook would be one of those priceless gifts you could give them This would definitely be considered a gift that keeps on giving.

But you say, “Erik, I don’t have the time to do that with all of the holiday hustle and bustle.” Agreed. And I will say that if you don’t have the time to do it, we DO have the time to do it for you! [Warning: Here comes the shameless holiday promotion].

As a final thought I am reminded of a great example of how fear controls people and how some people react to technology. Years ago I saw Jay Leno doing standup. He was talking about how he bought his parents a new TV with a remote. But when he went home for a visit they were still walking up to the TV to change the channel. He asked his Dad why they weren’t using the remote? And his Dad said, “You Mother was afraid we might start a fire if we didn’t aim it correctly”. Jay’s joke demonstrates how people are reluctant to use technology.
