The Peeple app was recently pulled from the market before it ever had a start. The creators felt like they had created a very “positive” app. But there was a very unexpected response and perspective from the online community that did not view the app as positive at all. We all know there are both positive and negative things on the internet every day. A digital landscape where anyone can comment, review, rate and regret things that they post.

One would argue that apparently the internet developed a conscience and scruples? After Peeple cofounders Julie Cordray and Nicole McCullough hit the internet with the announcement of what has been called, “YELP for People” by The Washington Post the backlash was almost immediately negative. The irony of the negativity is that the creators claim that the app was only ever intended to be a place for people to uplift others and post positive comments.

What do you think about an app or social platform that allows other people to post about you without your permission? Some may call that Facebook. . .or Twitter. . .or ??? Not that long ago the Yik Yak app learned a valuable lesson. The app became a place where school children and others had the anonymous freedom to bully others. Most schools have banned the app on campus.  There are others similar apps and platforms out there but you get the picture.

I ask the question again. Do you think the Peeple app that allows others to make, “positive” comments about you is a good idea? Does the internet actually have a conscience? Or is the internet being hypocritical and selective about the apps and social platforms it chooses to have scruples about?

uberbluerYou know the feeling. The feeling you get when something is working well. The feeling you get when people are actually singing your praises. Feeling like a celebrity.  Yes, being recognized by a fan while walking down the street or while you order your coffee in a cafe. They look up and say, “Hey man, I saw you on. . .” Now they may have seen you on television, a billboard, magazine, Google Hangout or somewhere else. But they saw you. And they let you know it.

For me it’s a result of “The Weekly Buzz”. Keep in mind this doesn’t happen to me every day. But it is happening more and more.  The Weekly Buzz is our way of offering free advice, information and some humor. Yes, the humor is free too. Don’t judge.

We  do our best to create episodes that speak to our audience. It is nice to have fans on the street give you an “attaboy” but the true payoff is when we know our advice is helping our viewers learn something new and then they use it for their businesses. If the episode or topic resonates with them enough to share it with their friends or they call us that is certainly an added bonus.

I consistently remind people to personalize invites they send to others when they invite them to connect on LinkedIn and to not rely on the default invite.  A personalized note reminds the individual you’re connecting with, where they may have met you and how you may know each other.

But times have changed. . .

The mobile LinkedIn app has me rethinking how I will advise people to connect. Why? There is now a distinct difference when sending an invite from the mobile app vs. the computer. You are not given the option to personalize your request when sending an invite to connect using the mobile app.  As a result the person on the other end simply receives the one liner default invite.

A missed opportunity. . .

I know several people who will not connect with someone without receiving a personalized invite. If you are the person on the receiving end of the standard/default one-liner invites, you will now need to think twice before dismissing them.  I recommend first, taking a few minutes to look at the profile of the people trying to connect to see how you might know them before trashing the invite. If you simply dismiss the invite you are potentially dismissing a valuable opportunity.

How to avoid being dismissed. . .

You yourself of course run the risk of being dismissed if the person you are sending an invite to subscribes to the “I don’t connect with anyone who sends me a default invite” mentality.   If you place a high value on a prospective connection, wait until you can send the invite from your pc or laptop. This way you can include the personalized details and chances are in your favor that you won’t be dismissed.

When is the last time you heard, “I didn’t know you do that”?

Video CameraA few months ago I started shooting brief videos of entrepreneurs and business owners sharing some nuggets of information/advice that they felt would be helpful to other entrepreneurs and business owners. As they shared, I shot their responses in short-format, using the least amount of production time and equipment. The videos were minimally edited, to keep the flavor of the chat in a conversational mode with the idea that you (the viewer) are actually having coffee or a meal with the person in the video.

Why do I shoot these videos? Because it gives you, the viewer a reason to check back and see what’s new. This is an opportunity for you to learn something and to be inspired with information which can help you grow your business. It also gives me interesting content I can share. But the videos also represent who we are as a branding and social media agency. We are in the business of helping other businesses succeed.

Do you have an interest in shooting and uploading a video? The topic of your videos will naturally depend on who you are and what you do.

We don’t always have to make things complex when it comes to video. The KISS principle (Keep It Simple Stupid (or if you don’t like using the word stupid I suggest replacing it with “Sweetheart”) still applies in many scenarios. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t give any thought to the topic, the audience and the desired outcome for the videos. I’m saying that the more complex you make the project, the more expensive and time consuming the project will be. This quite possibly will lead to your being less likely to shoot the video, .resulting in a failure to execute. Don’t fail to execute something that can be this simple.

Once you have the video edited and uploaded don’t forget to optimize the descriptions, tags, thumbnail and category. These are important items that many people forget when they upload their videos. This means they are missing out on the opportunity to “be found”. One other important step is to push the video out on all of your other social networks. You have the content. .  .use it.

The blurring of the lines with regard to communication is happening right in front of our eyes. Do you ever find yourself thinking that you had a verbal conversation with someone on the telephone when in reality you texted or instant messaged that person instead of having an actual verbal conversation? You still remember enough to know the specific details and that it was a meaningful conversation. What seems to be happening often is that all forms of communication are becoming more acceptable. Do you agree?

For example my team and I use a variety of methods to communicate. We may even be next to each other when we communicate via the variety of media we have at our disposal. They have become interchangeable with one another. The important point is that we are communicating effectively. And it works for us.

There is the constant question in social media about having meaningful conversations and interacting with your audience. Embracing all levels of communication also requires you and your business to still be cognizant of what works best for your audience. If calling an upset customer on the telephone is going to provide the best solution, then that’s the best option. If it is clear that the customer is most comfortable communicating on Twitter. . .then tweet. If your audience desires a monthly newsletter, then email it. Note: If they are upset and tweeting about it, do your best to move the conversation offline in a direct message as soon as possible. This applies to all social platforms.

I often hear that there is a generation gap and that certain people aren’t going to text or tweet or interact on Facebook. I disagree. How a person likes to communicate today is a personal choice. I always ask my clients what the best way is to communicate with them. I make note of it in my contact database and then I know which way works best for each client. Remember, never force your clients or customers to do it your way. It’s not about you. It’s about what is best and what works best for each client.

The reality is that you need to be utilizing a mix of all of the communication tools that are available, to reach your audience. I will repeat myself here and stress that if you aren’t a good communicator then find someone who is. Digital media isn’t killing social interaction and community. It is simply evolving and enhancing our methods of communication. History has time and again proven that one’s inability to evolve, to change, can have negative results and a lasting impact. It’s time to evolve.
