Last week I posed the question to a social media colleague of mine, “Do you ever have posting anxiety?” Keep in mind that this is a question from one social media person to another, but could be asked of anyone participating in the perpetual posting pandemonium. He paused for a moment and then answered, “Yes…I do have posting anxiety.” A social media professional that suffers from posting anxiety? So what creates this anxiety for social media professionals, business owners and brands alike?

I believe it’s the constant feeling that you must deliver something “over the top”. A feeling that each individual post must be earth shattering and life changing for the fan, follower and newcomer. And to add a little additional stress you feel you must post because everyone else says you should always be posting. There may be truth to this statement but posting for postings sake is never a good strategy.

Whether you are an individual or a business owner, you may be feeling this way. Before you get completely stressed out, you should first work through the exercise of answering the “why” questions. In other words ask “why” at the end of every statement that starts with “I (We) need to post [fill in the blank] because…”. If the answer to why doesn’t make sense then don’t post it. If it does makes sense post it. Simple enough exercise, don’t you think? You would be surprised how many people forget this simple exercise.

Remember this represents a simple process not a strategy. Always ask “why” in posting and in life. Feeling better? Now how are you feeling about the Posting Anxiety stress of not maintaining your social media presence? Lie down on the couch, close your eyes and tell us here. You are among friends.

Great advice! I write blogs, posts, advertising copy and fiction and the “Why” question will help me get through the blocks and anxiety.
